Education Fund Programs             Success Stories

OVERVIEW
The Education Fund is negotiated by the Union and Employers, as part of collective bargaining agreements, to provide educational and training opportunities to Service Employees International Union members working at 20 hospitals facilities and systems in California, Colorado, Nevada and Oregon. Our goals are to enhance career advancement and employment security, enable employers to hire and promote from within and contribute to an increasingly excellent standard of patient care.

ELIGIBILITY
You are generally eligible if you:

  • Work in a SEIU bargaining unit position for which an employer makes an Education Fund contribution
  • Are a regular full- or part-time employee eligible for benefits (non-benefited employees may be eligible for some services)
  • Have completed your initial probationary period
  • Meet other eligibility criteria that the training program or partner educational institution requires

Core Programs and Services: At a Glance

  • Skills Assessment and Career Counseling – The gateway to services provided by the Education Fund, including Career Seminars and one-on-one Counseling. The goal of this service is to identify and assess skills, interests, abilities, and potential barriers and establish employee-centered career and education goals.
  • Career Preparation Courses – These are basic courses and prerequisites that help employees get their career started, especially in high demand fields. Examples include Anatomy, Physiology and Medical Terminology. We also offer Academic Support such as tutoring and test preparation to assist students succeed in their classes.
  • Professional Development – Continuing education and specialty credentialing review courses offered to licensed professionals required to maintain their credentials or to obtain advanced credentials.
  • Job-to-Job Training - Programs targeted to employees whose jobs are at risk of displacement. Programs provide re-skilling into an existing or newly created position.
  • Nurse/Professional & Technical Education Stipend Program - Provides a limited number of stipends to allow employees enrolled in programs leading to high demand careers, such as nursing and radiologic technology, to reduce hours of work and focus on school.
  • Career Upgrade Programs – Intensive training programs provided depending on current and projected labor market demands. Examples include medical coding, nursing, and radiologic technology.
SCHEDULE OF CLASSES
The Education Fund offers college-level science prerequisite and basic support classes, continuing education courses, career planning workshops, and, in some cases, paid time off to go to school. These services are available twice a year in spring and fall semesters to eligible employees throughout Northern and Southern California as well as Colorado, Oregon and Nevada.
