The SEIU UHW-West & Joint Employer Education Fund provides career advancement opportunities for healthcare employees throughout California and in parts of Colorado, Oregon, Nevada and Washington.The services we offer address the unique needs of our participants - adult learners who work full time, have families and may be returning to school for the first time in years.

GENERAL INFORMATION & PURPOSE
The SEIU UHW-West & Joint Employer Education Fund provides opportunities for eligible healthcare employees to improve their skills, move up the career ladder and make a better life for themselves and their families. The Fund has three primary purposes:

  1. To provide education and training opportunities for healthcare employees.

  2. To enhance career advancement and employment security for incumbent employees.

  3. To contribute to an increasingly excellent standard of patient care.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
To be eligible for Education Fund services an employee must:

  • Work in a participating SEIU bargaining unit position for a contributing employer.
  • Be a regular full- or part-time employee eligible for benefits (non-benefited employees may be eligible for some services).
  • Have completed his/her initial probationary period with their employer.
  • Meet other eligibility criteria set by their selected college or training program.

CORE PROGRAMS & SERVICES AT A GLANCE

  • Career Counseling – One-on-one counseling with professionals trained to help eligible employees identify career goals and create a plan to achieve their goals through Education Fund classes, programs and other services.
  • Prerequisite/STEP Courses– Community college prerequisite classes needed to enter a Registered Nursing, Professional Radiologic Technology or other allied health program. Courses include Chemistry, Anatomy, Physiology and Microbiology as well as math and English. Courses are offered in a sequence that helps students achieve higher grades in the core sciences.
  • Academic Support Provides students with the skills needed to succeed in their career and education advancement efforts by. Offerings include workshops and short-term courses on test preparation, study skills improvement and academic preparedness as well as individualized and group tutoring and mentoring.
  • Professional Development – Continuing education and specialty credentialing review courses and multidisciplinary workshops offered at no charge to help to eligible employees maintain or upgrade their professional license or certificate.
  • Forgivable Loan Program - Allows participants enrolled in accredited nursing or other allied health degree programs to take time off work, with pay, to attend school and study. Average loan is $5,600 per student per year.
  • Long Term Care - Courses and training tailored for employees working in long term care facilities. Opportunities include Restorative Nursing Assistant training, workplace English skills improvement GED Test preparation and continuing education courses.
  • Career Upgrade Training – Training and certificate programs offered as requested by employer to help employees move into healthcare jobs that are in-demand. Recent programs include: Sterile Processing Technicians, Registered Nurses, Phlebotomists, Unit Assistants and Medical Coders.
  • Job-to-Job Training - Short-term training for employees being redeployed. Mainly intended to retrain workers for other open positions with the same employer.

Course schedules are included in our catalogs and by region on the SCHEDULE page of this website. The Education Fund publishes six catalogs per year - one for each of our regions and a Long Term Care Catalog in English and Spanish. The Catalogs are published in May. Courses are posted on the website around the same time. Additional courses or services may be offered throughout the year, so please check our Highlights page frequently.
